Caring for Inlays and Onlays
What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations used to repair larger areas of damage or decay in a tooth. They are custom made outside of the mouth and then cemented into a cavity like how a crown is placed.
They are often used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but does not require a full crown.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย An onlay extends over one or more cusps (the raised biting surfaces)
They can be made from porcelain, ceramic, gold alloys, or composite materials.
Why is cleaning important?
Although inlays and onlays are made from durable materials, the natural tooth around them can still develop decay.
Plaque accumulation around the margins may lead to:
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Recurrent (secondary) decay
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Sensitivity
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Gum inflammation
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย The inlay or onlay failing
Keeping the margins clean is key to long-term success.
How should I clean inlays and onlays?
Care for them as you would natural teeth:
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Clean between teeth once daily
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Pay attention to the edges of the restoration
Interdental cleaning is particularly important if the restoration extends between teeth.
A soft-bristled toothbrush is recommended to protect the surrounding gum tissue.
Tools to support inlay and onlay care
Inlays and onlays restore larger areas of the tooth, making margin care especially important. Using well-fitted interdental brushes can help keep these areas clean.
Interdental Brushes Original
One of the most effective tools for cleaning between teeth especially where you have an inlay or onlay.
Angle
An interdental brush with a longer handle allowing you to clean between your teeth in those harder-to-reach areas.
EasyPick
Designed to be used on-the-go, allowing you to clean between teeth wherever you are.
EasyFitย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
This tapered brush easily removes plaque and food from between teeth.
Dental Floss
For tighter spaces where interdental brushes wonโt fit floss can be used to clean.
Mini Flosser
If you struggle with regular dental floss, pre-loaded mini flossers could make it easier to clean between teeth.
Select Toothbrush
Available with medium, soft, or extra soft bristles with a small, tapered head, allowing for a gentle and effective clean around teeth, inlays and onlays.

FAQs about Inlays and Onlays
Are inlays and onlays strong?
Inlays and onlays are designed to restore strength to a weakened tooth. However, nothing will ever be as strong as the natural tooth enamel. Inlays and onlays rely on the remaining natural tooth, so while they help reinforce and protect it, they are not completely immune to problems. The tooth can still develop decay around the margins, and the underlying tooth can fracture if placed under excessive stress.
If you notice discomfort when biting, cracking sensations, or sensitivity, contact your dental practice.
How long do inlays and onlays last?
With good oral hygiene and regular dental monitoring, inlays and onlays can last many years.
Longevity depends on:
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Size and position of the restoration
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Your oral hygiene habits
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Bite forces
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย Attendance at routine dental appointments
ย
Is sensitivity normal after an inlay/onlay is fitted?
Some mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure can occur for a short time after treatment.
If sensitivity persists, worsens, or the tooth feels painful when biting, contact your dental practice for advice.
