Caring for Fillings
What is a filling?
A filling is used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay or minor fracture. The decayed area is removed and replaced with a restorative material, such as:
· Composite (tooth-coloured/ white filling)
· Amalgam (silver filling)
· Glass ionomer
A filling restores the shape and function of the tooth and helps prevent further damage.
Do fillings need special care?
The filling material itself cannot decay. However, the natural tooth around the filling still can. Plaque tends to collect around the edges (margins) of fillings. If these areas are not cleaned effectively, it can lead to:
· Recurrent (secondary) decay
· Gum inflammation
· Sensitivity
· Discolouration
Careful daily cleaning helps protect both the filling and the remaining tooth structure.
How should I clean a tooth with a filling?
Clean your filled tooth just as thoroughly as your other teeth:
· Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
· Pay attention to the gumline
· Clean between the teeth once a day
If the filling is between two teeth, interdental cleaning is particularly important. Interdental brushes or floss can help remove plaque from areas your toothbrush cannot reach.
Tools to support areas with fillings
Even with a filling in place, plaque can still accumulate around the margins and between teeth. Effective interdental cleaning helps protect the surrounding tooth structure.

If you struggle with regular dental floss, pre-loaded mini flossers could make it easier to clean between teeth.
FAQs about fillings
Is sensitivity normal after a filling?
Some mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure can occur for a short time after treatment.
If sensitivity persists, worsens, or the tooth feels painful when biting, contact your dental practice for advice.
How long do fillings last?
Fillings can last for many years, but they are not permanent.
Their lifespan depends on:
· The size of the filling
· Whether the tooth has been root treated
· Your oral hygiene
· Diet
· Bite forces and habits such as grinding
Regular dental examinations allow your dentist to monitor fillings and identify any problems early.
Can a filling fall out?
Although fillings are designed to be durable, it is possible for them to come loose or fall out over time. This can happen due to wear, tooth decay around the filling, trauma, or strong biting forces.
If a filling does come out, the tooth may feel sensitive or rough. Contact your dental practice as soon as possible so the tooth can be assessed and the filling repaired or replaced if needed.
Are silver fillings safe?
Amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry for many decades and are considered safe and effective. They are strong and long-lasting, which is why they have historically been used. Today, tooth-coloured fillings are more commonly used mainly due to environmental initiatives, as well as people preferring a more natural appearance. If you have existing silver fillings that are intact and not causing any problems, they do not usually need to be replaced. Regular dental examinations allow your fillings to be monitored and treatment to be carried out when it is appropriate.
